Raise Money to Fund Minutes of Research for Muscular Dystrophy Association ALS Division
SEPA APA Chapter Fundraiser – August 23rd at Playdrome Devon Lanes

ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease is a disease of the motor neurons, the nerve cells that control voluntary muscle movement.  For unknown reasons, motor neurons die and the muscles they control become weak and paralyzed.  Muscular Dystrophy’s involvement with ALS began in the early 1950’s when Mrs. Gehrig was searching for a way to fight the disease that had taken her husband’s life.  And since inception MDA has dedicated more than $230 million to ALS research and services.

Today MDA maintains some 225 hospital-affiliated clinics nationwide, providing specialized medical services for people affected by diseases such as ALS.  MDA also helps families defray the cost of medical equipment such as wheel chairs and leg braces.  This organization also supports a worldwide program of ALS research and in 2006 MDA launched a landmark screening of the entire human genome, which in less than a year yielded a list of suspicious gene changes that may predispose a person to nonhereditary ALS.  Following up quickly on these findings in 2007, MDA joined forces with the ALS Therapy Development Institute creating the largest privately funded ALS drug development project in history.  This three year project is applying cutting –edge technology to identify drugs with the goal of speeding the development of effective pharmaceutical therapies.

That’s where our chapter comes in.  It costs $85 a minute to fund research.  With our bowling event, we’re looking to see how many minutes of research we can raise.  Can we raise 5 minutes or more?

The chapter will provide for your 3 games of bowling and shoes.  And what bowling event would be complete without Pizza and Soda. We are only asking for a minimum contribution of $25 and you can raise this and more using the sponsor form above.  Two prizes will be awarded to the top two people who bring in the most donations and another prize will be awarded for the highest bowling score.

Go to the EVENTS page of the website to register for the event.  Feel free to bring a friend, spouse, or your children.  Each person coming will need to register separately or you can register them.  Each adult will be asked for a minimum of a $25 donation.
